Ask Personal Questions
Just because you are at work, doesn't mean you can't talk about personal things. Asking these types of questions will give you the opportunity to know the person on a more personal level.

  • How is your family (pet/girlfriend/boyfriend)?
  • What are your weekend plans?
  • Do you have any vacation plans coming up?
  • What are your holiday plans?

Ask Task or Assignment Related Questions
    Asking questions about someone else's assignments can show that you are interested in his/her work.
  • How is your current project coming along?
  • What are some of the challenges you are facing on your current assignment?
  • What do you like about your current project?
  • What did you learn from working on your current project?

When Meeting Someone New at Work
    Meeting new people can be one of the best parts of your job.
  • How long have you been working for this company?
  • What did you do before coming here?
  • What is your position/role?
  • Why did you want to become a (position)?

Talk About Your Work Place
    Your work enviroment is something that you share with those that work around you.
  • Do you think it's too cold in here?
  • What do you think about the new coffee maker?
  • What do you usually eat for lunch?
  • Are you going to the networking event this week?

Current Events
    Talking about current events can be a fun way to get to know someone.
  • Did you hear about (current event)?
  • What do you think about (current event)?
  • Did you see the game last night?
  • The weather has been really nice lately, do you have any plans to do anything outside?

Ask for Advice
    Asking someone for advice shows that you value his/her opinion.
  • What tips do you have to make (task) easier?
  • Do you have any advice on how to get promoted?
  • Do you have any tips on how to stay organized?
  • Do you have any tips on how to best prioritize my time?
  • What do you think is the best way to deal with (specific situation)?
